I stared at my phone for longer than I should have. His name was still there at the top of the screen.

Jay.

I locked my phone and dropped it onto my bed like that would somehow stop me from thinking about him. “It’s not that deep,” I said out loud, and I meant it. At least… I was trying to.

“You’re overthinking it already,” Nisha said, looking at me like she could see straight through me. “You said it yourself, it’s just vibes.”

“It is just vibes,” I replied, a little too quickly. She raised an eyebrow. “Mm.” I ignored it because technically, I was right. There’s no relationship, no expectations, no pressure. Just two people who enjoy each other’s company.

That’s it.

That’s all this is. My phone buzzed. I didn’t pick it up straight away, I wasn’t about to make it obvious. But eventually… I gave in.

Jay: “You up?” I tried not to smile, I replied, “Depends. What do you want?” The typing dots appeared almost instantly. Jay: “Come over.” My stomach flipped, not nerves, not excitement, something in between.

I should’ve said no, I knew I should’ve. There was that small voice in my head telling me to just stay home, to leave it alone, to not complicate things. But it wasn’t loud enough, or maybe I just didn’t want to listen.

Later that night, I sat on the edge of his bed, fixing my top like everything was normal...Like this was normal. Jay walked back into the room, completely unbothered, like nothing had just happened.

“Stay,” he said casually. I looked at him for a second, I almost did. But instead, I shook my head “I should go.” He just nodded. No hesitation. No reaction. No “are you sure?”Just… okay. And for some reason, that didn’t sit right with me.

On my way home, I kept replaying everything in my head, trying to make it make sense. Trying to convince myself that this was exactly what I said I wanted, something simple, something easy, no feelings. But if it was really that simple… why did it feel like something was already shifting?

When I got home, my phone buzzed again. Jay: “Text me when you get home.” I stared at the message, then I looked at myself in the mirror, and for the first time that night… I hesitated.

Because I don’t actually know what this is. And I have a feeling… it’s not going to stay “casual” for long.
